In October 2019 I was asked to go on a really fun live radio show to talk about my writing. It 6'Oclock Live with Barra & Cal is on Maritime Radio, a local Greenwich radio station. We talked about music, my writing and my novel, Into the Mouth of the Lion. Not only are they a great pair of broadcasters who banter with humour, but they asked me to choose music to talk about different steps along my journey to become the writer I am today.

We talked about my childhood in Michigan, USA, close to Motown, and my start as a writer, which I trace back to my 5th and 6th grade teacher who still inspires me today. Then I shared some thoughts about how I got started working in refugee advocacy in the Kosovo conflict, learning from a compassionate mentor about how to approach people with love and respect for what they’d been through. Through photography and writing we would gather their stories and try to get the truth out from places wracked by conflict or disaster. In the decades before social media and camera phones, this was important work to make sure people were not held behind walls of silence.

But amongst some of these stories about my photography and travels, there were some funny facts and a bit about the taxi driver bring Cal’s glasses to him in the middle of the show.  I chose a range of music, but in the end there was only time to play two of my songs: Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and Nina Simone’s Aint Got No, I Got Life.
